On the 3rd Sunday of every month, The Piston Ring club of South Africa has its monthly meet at their Modderfontein grounds. Dotted around under the tall fresh smelling Eucalyptus trees, are hundreds of classic cars. Every shape, size and colour imaginable.
If you have an interest in the vehicles of yesteryear, then this is a great place to spend a Sunday morning checking out all the golden oldies. (Remember to bring a cloth with, to wipe up all your drool)
There are three real reasons I go:
1. I love the old cars. They have a unique and solid dignity about them.
Imagining the places these cars have been, the people they’ve carried and the stories they’ve lived through, it makes one stop and think.
2. I love to people watch; to see a father teaching his son the names of the cars. Telling him “This was the first car I ever drove”, or “My Dad had one of these when I was young”.
Or to see two old friends reminisce about times gone past. Sweet memories evoked by four wheels.
3. Thirdly and very importantly, there is little stall usually half way down the grounds, that sells, THE BEST bacon and egg rolls ever 🙂
It’s a bit scary to think, that when I reach old age (no comments from the peanut gallery) a classic car will be something like the Audi A3.
I shudder to think what our mode of transport will be in 50 odd years. Jetpacks? Supertubes?
Eish no! Too scary to think of, I’m going back to dreaming of golden oldies instead…..
