Some of my loyal readers may remember a post I did a few years back on Aloes
Well, it seems it’s a topic I get hooked on (punn intended) so here’s another…
I’ve been following a page on Facebook called The ALOE FARM and have seen their post’s get more and more colourful of recent. Their displays looked worthy of a trip and so on Sunday I kidnapped some family members, bundled them into Red Rocket and took a drive out to the other side of the Magaliesburg mountain range. It’s about an hour’s drive if you’re in no hurry, and well worth a visit. My eyes are still recovering from colour overload, here’s why….
For me, there is something special about nurseries, I can easily spend hours wandering around, ogling plants and planning imaginary gardens. (as long as someone holds my wallet – we’re all good)
But The Aloe Farm has an added bonus, not just colourful aloes, but their most frequent visitors.
These little Sunbirds hide between the flower bracts sucking up nectar, giving one glimpses of their astoundingly pretty plumage. They are rather camera wary, which proves a good challenge to any avid (and extra patient) photographer. (Quick disclaimer… I am, quite possibly, the worst bird photographer ever)
If you’re wondering what to do with a sunny weekend morning (and live within a reasonable range)
The Aloe Farm is well worth a visit. But be careful you don’t get hooked…

Now this one roasts the bar a tad……. Aloes are super, do you have the aloe book…… Nice cloud
Thanks Mr Neary, yes, the Jeppe one.
What a splendid range they have. Especially like the one where you’ve caught the flighty hummingbird in the foreground and have a palm leaf in the background. It lends a nice pattern to the picture. Thanks for the great post, Ashley!
Thanks Maryke!
Bet you guys have some stunning aloes in Mpumalanga?
I had my own love affair with the Aloes of Pilgrim’s Rest last Thursday. They are after all the flowers that got me taking photos in the first place.
Beautiful! Just beautiful! And those sun birds?……absolutely stunning pics, Little Ash Cloud.
Great stuff, Ash. Can’t go wrong with aloes, sunbirds, a camera and good friends.
